Meet Winnie Bokenge

Meet Winnie Bokenge

With admirable perseverance and selfless dedication to her family, Winnie Bokenge began sewing as a young girl to support her family in Congo, Africa. She honed in on her natural talent, first creating doll clothes for her friends. Soon after she received her first Singer sewing machine, which helped advance her craft to dresses for kids and expectant mothers. Her designs were gaining recognition, with vendors ordering her creations for their shops.

Sadly, in 2000, Congo was experiencing civil unrest, causing Winnie and her family of 13 children to flee to Uganda as refugees. In 2008, the Bokongoles found sponsorship through a church, granting them the opportunity to immigrate to Canada. 2013 was the year that Smithers became their new home in the North, and a chance at a fresh start.

Winnie certainly feels blessed to live in such a wonderful community. Local residents provided all the machinery needed to start up her sewing business, and everyone has been so welcoming to her and her family. Winnie finds Smithers to be peaceful and it has been easy to make friends. She is thankful for everyone that supports her, and especially for the local office at Work BC who guided her along her journey in running a successful business as an immigrant.
