Meet Brian & Sheona Sikkes / Caitlan & Darren McMillan
When Paul Sikkes, a baker, moved from Holland to Canada in 1958, he opened up Paul’s Bakery in Smithers. He later passed on the business to his son, who then passed it on to his son Brian who owns it today along with his wife, Sheona and their daughter Caitlan McMillan and husband Darren. The bakery has been a long family tradition, and Brian and Sheona are proud to be sharing it now with the fourth generation of Paul Sikkes’ family.
The Sikkes pride themselves on making a high-quality product, and they say that their long-time customers have come to expect that of them. “We really take a lot of pride in our reputation in the community,” says Sheona. “We have a strong, loyal customer base, so we put a lot of care into what we make for them.” She adds that they know that their customers are their friends, neighbours and fellow business owners, so making a quality product is personal for them.
The Sikkes and the McMillans are a tight-knit family and love spending time together, both at work and outside of the bakery. They enjoy the outdoors and are all actively involved in the community. “We love Smithers,” says Sheona, and feels that it’s vital to give back to it. Darren is a volunteer firefighter and also coaches minor hockey. The family regularly supports local schools and children and youth organizations and also donate to the Christmas hamper effort during the holiday season.
Fresh. Local. High-Quality.
Paul’s Bakery has been a family-owned-and-operated business since Paul Sikkes first opened it 1958. The bakery offers retail sales of its daily fresh-baked bread, donuts, cakes, buns and pastries, and customers will taste the same delicious quality that Paul baked into every product in 1958. Paul’s Bakery also supplies wholesale baked goods to numerous Bulkley Valley restaurants and stores.
