Meet Lara & Clay Collingwood

Meet Lara & Clay Collingwood

Fitness instructor and Luna's Fitness owner Lara Collingwood and her husband Clay made a deliberate choice to move from Vancouver to Smithers several years ago to be near family and to take advantage of the affordable cost of living. In fact, the Collingwoods love everything about Smithers. "It is a wonderful and safe place to raise children," Lara says. "There are many people in the community who support each other, even if you don't have immediate family in town to rely on."

The abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities was also a big draw for Lara and Clay. Both are very active and they love that there is skiing as close as their backyard. They also go boating, fishing and camping as a family, and Lara likes to go stand-up paddle boarding. One of her favourite spots is Lake Kathlyn, where the water is calm and placid and has a beautiful glacier view.

Lara and Clay are excited about the future of small business in Smithers, pointing out that people here are very loyal to and supportive of their local businesses. Both have noticed an increase of activity in the downtown core since they first came to Smithers in 2005 and feel that this is a positive indicator of the state of business as well as of what is to come.
