Hips Required Bellydance

Arts-Education-Fitness & Exercise

Hips Required Bellydance takes the ancient art of Bellydance to new levels with its classes that are designed to be informative and a fun form of exercise.

Class participants will learn the basics of Bellydance, as well as learn about the culture that is part of the history and lore of this dance style. Class participants need have no prior dance experience. Instructor Shalome Cowley takes care to design classes in a way that makes them easy for beginners to understand and master the moves, while also offering extra challenge for those who are more experienced and want to expand their expertise. Workshops are held regularly for students who wish to pursue the art in greater depth. Additionally, the studio offers performance opportunities for students interested in pursuing the art of Bellydance at a higher level.

Want to learn a bit about Bellydance with a group of girlfriends in a casual setting? Consider hosting a Bellydance party. Parties begin with a short demonstration performance followed by a 30-50 minute group lesson. Coin belts are provided for the duration of the party and there is an option to include veil dancing for up to ten women. Bellydance parties are perfect for stagettes, birthdays and showers.

Meet Shalome Cowley

Shalome Cowley has a passion for bellydance that drove her to launch Hips Required Bellydance in 2014. For Shalome, Bellydance is an extremely empowering form of dance as well as an art form that transcends age and culture. In fact, Shalome says, it creates "a community of women of all ages."

Shalome feels privileged to make a business out of something that she enjoys so much and in the town that she loves. Smithers has "a true sense of community and connectedness. In my experience, there is something about being in a small, somewhat isolated town that brings people closer together, and I think it makes people really value one another." And, she adds, "There is only one degree of separation between everyone in Smithers, and it is always fun to figure that out!"

Shalome loves to dance whether she's at work or at home. When she's not dancing, you'll probably find her spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoys playing the guitar and is involved in the local Flute Choir.
