Meet Amanda Dorscht
Amanda Dorscht knew from a young age that she wanted to be a dance teacher. Amanda began taking dance lessons as a young child and continued dancing throughout high school and University. It was when she was a teenager that she decided she wanted to continue to teach and open her own dance studio. She studied Business in University in her home province of Ontario, and after graduating with her Business degree, she began looking for a teaching position at a dance studio.
Amanda’s partner was also looking for work and both were lead to Smithers where Amanda’s partner found a job. The timing couldn’t have been better. Amanda worked as an Instructor and Office Administrator in her first year at Creative Roots. In 2011, the well-established Creative Roots Performing Arts Dance Studio was purchased by Amanda, and it was a dream come true.
Since buying the studio in 2011, Amanda has made a number of changes to the business. One of the biggest is the addition of a retail dance supplies shop. “It seemed silly to be sending our dancers out of town to buy their dance wear and supplies. Now they can get everything they need right here in Smithers at the studio.”
In addition to running the business, Amanda teaches several dance classes. She’s also a student herself, noting that it is important to her to be a lifelong learner and to continue to improve her own skills.
Creative. Upbeat. Inspiring.
Many local dancers have gotten their start at Creative Roots Performing Arts over the last three decades. Today’s students can choose from a variety of dance styles and disciplines, including ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, modern and lyrical. The studio also offers classes in creative movement for children ages two through six as well as musical theatre classes and adult dance classes.
Creative Roots Performing Arts features an on-site dancewear and dance supplies retail shop. All dancers will find everything they need for practice and performance alike from brands like Mondor, Bloch, Capezio and So Danca.
Amanda was the 2013 winner of the Smithers’ District Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneur Award.
