Meet Carly & Nels McIntyre
When the opportunity came up to purchase an established sushi restaurant on Main Street in Smithers, Carly and Nels McIntyre couldn’t let it pass them by. “It was one of those right place right time situations,” said Nels, “we both wanted to be business owners and the timing was right for us to make the change”. Carly and Nels wanted to lead by example, showing their children and others that you can take a risk, become your own boss and run your own successful business.
Carly takes care of the office and books while staying closely connected with her staff and the customers at Blue Water Sushi. Nels works the bar, carries out maintenance work to make sure everything from chairs to coolers are in top shape and also is the supply runner for the restaurant.
Blue Water Sushi is truly a family affair with their eldest daughter serving and their son occasionally bartending. They both see their youngest daughter interested in getting into the kitchen for some creative sushi rolling in the future too.
Their business is located right on busy Main Street and Carly loves the fact you can step out of Blue Water Sushi and be downtown where everyone greets each other on the street with smiles. The friendly culture of Main Street and the camaraderie of fellow business owners is part of what Carly loves about working and living in Smithers.
When Carly and Nels are not busy at their sushi restaurant they love relaxing at home with their family or enjoying the outdoors. Nels also enjoys cross-country skiing, fishing, hunting and exploring the vistas along the snowshoe and bike trails along the base of Hudson Bay Mountain.
Creative. Dependable. Original.
Blue Water Sushi provides high-quality and beautiful Japanese sushi, Western-style sushi, rice bowls, tempura seafood and authentic Japanese cuisine. Owners Carly and Nels pride themselves on their staff’s great customer service, their restaurant’s warm atmosphere and their impeccable food. “We have a fabulous staff team and a great product, our chefs are outstanding, we’re really proud of our business,” said Carly.
Like many other small businesses, Blue Water Sushi gives back to their community. They donate gift certificates to local causes for their gift basket raffles or door prizes. They also donate their bottle recycling money to Sunny Hill Animal Rescue.
