Simon Franklin is a biologist, but when he couldn't find work in his field back in 1998, he didn't let any grass grow under his feet. Instead, he started BC Web, and his business has grown as technology has changed and more people have adapted it to their lives and businesses.

Simon concedes that small town; small business ownership has unique challenges. But he has always risen to those challenges, and feels highly optimistic about Smithers' economic future. "Smithers has lots of dynamic young business owners with lots of energy, and the conviction to pursue their dreams," he says. He also believes that Smithers residents have a much better pulse on the importance of supporting local businesses than many other small communities.

Simon has an affinity for small town living, and Smithers in particular because everything one needs is close by, including nature. He points out that the outdoor recreation opportunities are virtually endless and that many people don't even realize what's available, like all of the local hiking trails. In a small town, there are more opportunities to participate in and give back to the community and make a difference in ways that would not be possible in a big city, and this is something that is important to Simon both in business and in his personal life.
