Meet Elaine & Randy Rodgers

Elaine & Randy Rodgers is the owner of Maple Leaf Cabins

According to Elaine Rodgers, Smithers and the Bulkley Valley is “BC’s best-kept secret.” Says Elaine, “It is beautiful here. There are so many things to do. You can access any recreational activity that you want from the Bulkley Valley. And the views are spectacular!” Elaine and her husband, Randy, particularly enjoy the view from their 124-acre riverfront farm property. It is nestled between two magnificent mountain ranges and just steps from some of the northern interior’s best river fishing. In fact, many of their guests come for exactly that reason, though Elaine says that it is wonderful even for those who don’t want to fish because the location is so quiet and peaceful.

In addition to their cabin rental business, the Rodgers work their farm, producing hay, produce and haskap berries. Their haskap berries were shipped to a distillery where they were made into liqueur that won a Double Gold Medal at the World Spirits Show in Copenhagen in March of 2015. The Rodgers like to keep busy, and they have operated other businesses on their property over the years. When they decided to get into the hospitality business, they built the cabins themselves. After they opened, one of their very first guests from Europe gave them a gift of a maple tree, which they planted behind one of the cabins. That’s how the business got its name, and the tree still stands in the same spot today.

Elaine is adamant that it is small businesses that drive the small community and she feels grateful to play a small part in that drive in the Smithers area. She is also resolute in her belief that customer service is the key to business success. It is something they continually strive to provide their guests, knowing that they would expect no less themselves if they were looking for a place to stay while traveling. Even little things, like fresh in-room coffee, make a difference. “This is what we try to offer to guests, the little extra touches,” says Elaine.
